Dear First Grade Parents and Visitors:
As this school year comes to a close I would like to take this time
to say thank you for a wonderful school year and for sharing your
children with me. I am excited to return to St. Mary School for my
seventh year. I will be teaching first grade again.
To my upcoming first graders…. I am looking forward to an
exciting school year in which we will incorporate the “Smart
Board” into our curriculum! I have many projects I will be
working on over the summer break to enhance and differentiate our
current curriculum. Please continue to read over the summer….I
have recommended books for the Barnes and Noble summer reading program,
if you read all 8 books you will receive a coupon for a free book!
Have a fun and relaxing summer vacation…I will keep
all of you in my thoughts and prayers. I look forward to seeing
all of you
next year!
Sincerely
Ms. Wehling

I believe in a well-managed classroom in which
the students feel both safe and confident to explore new ideas and
are able to share ideas with
the rest of the class. In order to achieve such an environment, I must
be prepared and organized with the lessons and the daily routines.
I feel children perform best when given a set routine and know what
is
expected of them. Of course unexpected events can happen and I will do my best
to prepare the children in order to alleviate any distress. I believe that positive
reinforcement
is the best defense against negative behaviors. I point out and acknowledge students
who are being well behaved or doing a good deed.
Although I try to focus on the positive behaviors, there are times when negative
behaviors
do occur. To deal with these misbehaviors I use a ‘
popsicle ’ method. Each student has apple ‘sleeve’ on his or
her desk with 5 popsicle sticks in it. The student’s goal is to keep all
the sticks throughout the day. If the student misbehaves I will start taking
sticks away. When I take one stick that is a warning that they need to stop any
misbehavior that is occurring. Two sticks will result in 5 minutes off of recess,
three sticks is 10 min. off of recess and a note home. Four sticks, no recess
at all, and five, the student will be sent to Ms. Weis. In past experiences,
the
misbehaviors usually stop when the first stick is taken, for some it may take
two, and in rare cases three and a note home.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to call
me.
