Prayers To Know

A consistent prayer life is essential to grow in a strong relationship with God. Regular prayer times are necessary for all of us to calm down and refocus our energies away from the world and to look toward God. It is especially important to start children early so that they form a habit of regular prayer.

On the following pages you will find selected Catholic prayers. The catechists will spend some time reviewing these prayers, however, they cannot do it alone. Please work with your children to help them experience, memorize, and understand the importance of these prayers. We have printed these prayers to ensure that all students are learning the same version that will be used in classroom recitation.

Prayer is not limited to these rote prayers, but they do provide a starting place. Parents need to continue to enhance their children's prayer lives with family devotions, prayers before meals, morning and evening prayers, etc. Creating prayer time and space for family and individuals will be very beneficial as the children grow and mature in their faith.

The Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

The Lord's Prayer
Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Hail Mary
Hail, Mary, full of grace! The Lord is with you; blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Prayer before Meals
Bless us, O Lord and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen

Prayer after Meals
We give You thanks for all Your benefits, O almighty God, who lives and reigns forever; and may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen

Morning Offering
O my God, I offer you every thought and word and act of today. Please bless me, my God, and make me good today.

Act of Contrition (contemporary)
O my God, I am sorry for my sins. In choosing to do wrong, and failing to do good, I have sinned against You whom I should love above all else. I firmly intend with the help of your Son, to do penance and to sin no more. Amen

Act of Contrition (traditional)
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you, and I detest all my sins, because of your just punishments, but most of all because they offend You, my God, who are all-good and deserving of my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen

The Apostle's Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven and sits at the right had of God, the Father, Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, and the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen

Act of Faith
O my God, I firmly believe that You are the one God in three Divine Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; I believe that Your Divine Son became man and died for our sins and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches, because You revealed them, who can neither deceive nor be deceived.

Act of Hope
O my God, relying on your infinite goodness and promises. I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of your grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my
Lord and Redeemer.

Act of Love
O my God, I love You above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because You are all good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of You. I forgive all who have injured me, and I ask pardon of all whom I have injured.

Come Holy Spirit
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your divine love.
V. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
R. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray. O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit, we may be truly wise, and ever rejoice in your consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen

Eternal Rest
Eternal rest grant to them, O lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace. Amen.

Glory Be to the Father
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Hail Holy Queen
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy! Our life, our sweetness and our hope! To you we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to you we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn them, O most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Amen

Confiteor
I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words. In what I have done, and in what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Magnificat
My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord, My spirit finds joy in God my savior. For He has looked upon his servant in her lowliness; all ages to come shall call me blessed. God who is mighty has done great things for me, Holy is His name; His mercy is from age to age on those who fear Him; He has shown might with his arm; He has confused the proud in their inmost thoughts. He has deposed the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly to high places. The hungry He has given every good thing, while the rich He has sent empty away. He has upheld Israel His servant, ever mindful of his mercy; even as He promised our fathers, promised Abraham, and his descendants forever.

Memorare
Remember, most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to
your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother. To you, I come; before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen

Queen of Heaven (Regina Coeli)
Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia. For He whom you were chosen to bear, alleluia. Has risen as He said, alleluia. Pray to God for us, alleluia. Rejoice and be glad, Virgin Mary, alleluia. For the Lord is truly risen, alleluia.
Let us pray: Father, you were pleased to give joy to the world through the resurrection of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Grant, we beseech you that through the mediation of the Virgin Mary, His mother, we may come to possess the joys of life everlasting. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen
